# 10 Rienzi circa 1796
# 10 Rienzi circa 1796

Re-drawn from the great pencil art by Miss M. S. Hays in 1955.

Rienzi Plantation is located on the East bank of Bayou LaFourche in Thibodaux, Louisiana. A combination of Spanish & West Indian architecture tempered with Greek Revival influence, Rienzi's feeling is definetely tropical and romantic. A gracefully curved and much photographed double staircase leads to the galerie. The house has 2 intersecting center halls on each floor. One of the halls on the lower floor was originally a carriage-way through the center of the house. but has been closed in since the 1850's

According to legend the house was built for Queen Maria Louisa of Spain as a refuge should Napoleon's army invade Spain. Napoleon did not invade and the Queen never saw her house.

In 1803 the plantation was purchased by Juan Ygnacio de Egana who had been a representative of Queen Maria Louisa. Later an Italian is said to have owned the plantation and named it after a 14th Century Italian patriot, Cola de Rienzi.

Recently the Levert family has donated the plantation and grounds to Nicholls State University and will house the university's Chef John Folse Culinary Institute.
