WOOD EMPRESS STUDIOS™     Home of fine wood burned engravings.

Each piece that is offered here is hand crafted in Louisiana, signed, numbered, and dated with month and year of completion, and comes with a certificate of authentication from Wood Empress Studios™.

Wood Empress Studios™  is a home based studio located on the outskirts of Houma, Louisiana.  I hope to offer products of interest to everyone and within everyones price range.  As these pieces consume an awefully lot of time to complete, they are very limited.   Besides, i have a day job and i do this in the evenings and my days off.  If only there were more hours in a day !

In the near future i will be offering certain engravings on even higher quality woods, such as Oak and Birch, in particular my engravings of Plantations and Antebellum homes, which i adore thanks to my Aunt Trudy, who taught me at a very young age to appreciate our Southern history. If you see something you like and is not offered on the wood you prefer, contact me and i'll see what i can do.  The boards are hand picked by me, at a local lumber yard and custom cut in my shop, and being handcrafted, no two will ever be exactly the same.

Oh yeah, on a personal note......since i started this hobby, my coffee intake has been lowered and my wine consumption is near zero !

# 4 Nottoway circa 1859

At the edge of sugar cane fields, Nottoway stands overlooking the Mississippi River in White Castle, Louisiana, south of Baton Rouge. It is the largest of the Antebellum Plantations remaining in Louisiana, second in size and grandeur only to Belle Grove Plantation Home, which suffered a series of disasters, and finally succumbed to fire.

This enormous mansion, completed in 1859, reflects an unusual combination of Greek Revival architectural elements with innovative blends of John Hampden Randolph's fanciful desires.

The house has 50 rooms, which were certainly needed as Randolph had 11 children. It is said that Nottoway was the first Plantation to have a bathroom on the second floor and also had hot & cold running water.

Inside one cannot escape the beauty & elegance of it's famous White Ballroom. It was the center of all the Randolph's entertainment activities, with parties, receptions and balls that would go on late into the night.

In 1862, Randolph took his slaves and went to Texas to work a cotton plantation there, in order to keep himself solvent. The Randolphs sent there teenage daughters away to safer territory and Randolph's wife, Emily Jane Liddell Randolph remained on the plantation with the younger children, 2 visiting lady friends, and a few of her slaves. One of her daughters, Cornelia, kept a diary. It is from this diary as well as from preserved letters and documents that we know of Emily Jane's courage.

At one point in 1862, when she was 45 years old, she faced down the Union Navy. Gun boats were sailing by the house, and Union troops had begun to bivouac on the lawn. Armed with only a dagger which she tucked into her belt, she went out on the front gallery. She was determined not to let the Union troops into her house. Many homes along the river had been abandoned, these deserted homes, if not burned, were destroyed by looting and vandalism. As she stood on the front gallery, a group of Confederate soldiers opened fire on the Union troops. The gun boats on the river returned fire. Though they were not aiming at the house, much of the fire hit it or landed on the grounds. When the firing became heavy, Emily gathered her children, friends, and slaves, and took them all to the ground floor where the walls were four feet thick. When the barrage was over, she alone had the courage to mount the stairs and assess the damage.

It was in that same year that Emily Jane gave birth to her 11th and last child, Julia Marceline Randolph.

Although the Union Army encamped several times on the lawn during the course of the Civil War, they never entered the house except to search for weapons.

Nottoway served as inspiration for the filming of the movie "Gone With The Wind". Scarlett O'Hara fashioned her dress from drapes very similar to those that hang in the Randolph study.

Today, Nottoway is open for public tours, and has bed & breakfast accomodations, a restaurant, and a gift shop. The Grand White Ballroom is a favorite setting for wedding receptions. Many visitors enjoy the bonus of watching the paddlewheel riverboats, such as the Delta Queen, as they pass the plantation grounds on their journey up the Mississippi River.

Re-drawn from a postcard by Robert Seago.  This is my very first plantation, burned engraving. I finished this one off in 2 coats of classic oak stain, and 2 coats of high quality, heavy duty, polyureathane, front and back. The outside border is trimmed with gold accents.

I hope whoever purchases this one enjoys it as much as i do.

Signed, numbered, and dated 11/2004 on back of board, which is also engraved and burned.

Size is 12" x 20" x 3/4" thick, oval Pine plaque, comes ready to hang.

# 5 Mini Nottoway circa 1859

This miniature plantation scared me in the begginning, i went from a large engraving of this plantation, to a tiny one....extremely tedious !   Re-drawn from a postcard by Robert Seago.

I started with a board that i pre-stained in yellow, lightly sanded it after engraving and burning was completed, to give it a "weathered" look. The back has 2 coats of pecan stain and the whole piece is finished off with 2 coats of polyureathane....need i add high quaility, heavy duty ? hehehehe

This piece is not for sale, it will be given to my Aunt Trudy this Christmas, but i will have another miniature posted to this website in the future.

   Completed 11/2004

   Size is 5" x 7" x 5/8" thick, french cornered plaque

# 7 Nottoway circa 1859

The photo does not do this piece justice.   Re-drawn from a postcard by Robert Seago.

This board was finished in several heavy coats of pecan stain and polyureathane front and back. The front has an almost glasslike smoothness.

If i were to suggest any of these pieces, this would be the one. The heavy pecan stain really adds warmth to this burned engraving.

Signed, numbered, and dated 11/2004 on back of board which is also engraved and burned.

# 10 Rienzi circa 1796

Re-drawn from the great pencil art by Miss M. S. Hays in 1955.

Rienzi Plantation is located on the East bank of Bayou LaFourche in Thibodaux, Louisiana. A combination of Spanish & West Indian architecture tempered with Greek Revival influence, Rienzi's feeling is definetely tropical and romantic. A gracefully curved and much photographed double staircase leads to the galerie. The house has 2 intersecting center halls on each floor. One of the halls on the lower floor was originally a carriage-way through the center of the house. but has been closed in since the 1850's

According to legend the house was built for Queen Maria Louisa of Spain as a refuge should Napoleon's army invade Spain. Napoleon did not invade and the Queen never saw her house.

In 1803 the plantation was purchased by Juan Ygnacio de Egana who had been a representative of Queen Maria Louisa. Later an Italian is said to have owned the plantation and named it after a 14th Century Italian patriot, Cola de Rienzi.

Recently the Levert family has donated the plantation and grounds to Nicholls State University and will house the university's Chef John Folse Culinary Institute.

This burned engraving is full of detail and finished with 3 coats of Honey Pine stain and 3 coats of polyureathane front and back and has handpainted gold accents on the plaque border.

Signature, date of completion 12/2004, and numbered 10, engraved and burned on the back

#16 Belle Grove Plantation circa 1857

Re-drawn from the pencil art by M. S. Hays in 1959.

Belle Grove Plantation was one of the grandest in Louisiana. It was designed by Henry Howard for John Andrews at the pinnacle of prosperity during the 1850's sugar boom. It was completed in 1857 and was later owned by the Henry Ware family. Abandoned by 1925, the Historic American Buildings Survey documented her in 1938. After years of neglect and vandalism, it succumbed to fire in 1952. It would have been the largest plantation home in Louisiana, outdoing Nottoway....the friendly competitors.

Louisiana
Louisiana, ruin-haunted land; land of the writhing, ever-coiling bayous, whose passages are lined with the grey dolorous membranes of moss; land of the magnolias whose wild sweetness becomes almost visible because of its heavy burden of remembrance; land of broken white columns struggling among fierce green hordes of foliage; land of shadow - haunted and shadow - silent waters, mirroring a brooding that knows no bounds --- a feeling of being lost forever in the savage and magical wilderness of time, where the past and the present have become one, and are forever and inextricably mingled !

Louisiana : to thy moist teeming earth; to thy flat dark mirrors overhung with the grey clouds of moss, and the green clouds of willows; to the lush vestments of sugar cane and rice; to thy great sails of banana trees; to the palms, which are quivering fountains of light; to thy heavily scented and moon - amorous flowers; to thy iron growths of balconies and cemetary ornamentation; to thy simple, naive, and earth - loving buildings of brick and plaster; to thee, whose very name is music, do our hearts turn, Louisiana !

Cajun Cypress Knee Carving
Deep in South Louisiana the Cypress tree grows wild in the swamps. Fighting mosquitos, alligator, and other critters, this cypress knee was harvested just for you. It is a carving of the tree spirit as seen deep in the swamp. Here is just an example of the trees wisdom and understanding sculpted by a local artist.

This carving stands just about 13" from base to top of the sleeping racoon perched on his head. The artists initials are ingraved near the base as well as the year it was made (2001). It also has a clear coat finish which makes this wood carving an eye catcher.
